Backyard mission

A mini-documentary produced by CMS-NSW

Does the cultural make-up of your church match up with the demographics of your area? The mission field isn't confined to exotic, far-flung locations - it's also in our backyard. In this exclusive mini-documentary, we take a tour around Sydney to see how local churches are responding to the changing face of our city, and how cross-cultural ministry here fits together with missionary work in other places.

Featuring: St Andrew's Anglican Church, Lakemba; Hurstville Presbyterian Church; Caringbah Presbyterian Church; Sydney Japanese Evangelical Church, Cammeray.

Special thanks to Bethany Young and Mike Wilson for their help in producing this mini-documentary.

Want to get involved?

If God is stirring your heart for cross-cultural ministry, why not find out what's happening in your area? Check out any cross-cultural ministries that are running at your church - or maybe even start your own!

Cross-cultural ministry here is a fantastic training ground for anyone who is thinking that mission could be a possibility for them in the future.  If you're someone who is passionate about reaching out to the nations, it's a great idea to start getting your hands dirty now. And make sure you start talking with CMS about mission - its never too early to begin conversations about potential avenues and plans.

If you're interested in finding out more about cross-cultural ministry on our doorstep or further afield, Mark Fairhurst from CMS-NSW's Mission Education team would love to hear from you.

Great resources for cross-cultural ministry...

Going Global
Designed by CMS, the Going Global short course will not only give you a biblical framework for world mission but also help to equip your group for cross-cultural ministry. The content and duration of the course can be tailor-made according to your group's needs, interests and passions. And best of all, it's free! Email CMS if you want to run a Going Global course at your group or church, or find out more info online.

Face to Face Intercultural
Rev Mike Wilson is the Cross-cultural Ministry Coordinator for the NSW Presbyterian Church, and he's the man behind this amazing portal for cross-cultural ministry resources. With years of cross-cultural experience both here and overseas, Mike's articles and study programs provide a fantastic starting point for reaching out effectively to our multicultural neighbours.

God's Mission and Ours: the Challenge of Telling the Nations
This little book is a nugget of gold. Edited by Peter T. O'Brien, God's Mission and Ours will open your eyes to the vastness of God's mission in Christ - a mission that stretches from NSW to every corner of our broken and confused world. God's Mission and Ours is available through the CMS office, so email CMS to grab your copy. There's also a free study guide online.
